Things I am capable of

I am currently capable of these things, right now. There may be other things but these are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

  • taking a nice photo
  • running a video shoot
  • editing video
  • creating a rudimentary website
  • basic graphic design
  • creating a simple Java program
  • knitting
  • sewing
  • clockmaking
  • riding a horse/bike
  • driving a car/truck
  • playing piano, guitar, bass
  • singing
  • mixing live sound
  • audio recording
  • fixing a guitar pedal, guitar, amp.
  • designing a guitar effect, or solid state amplifier
  • building electronics things
  • explaining electronics to the uninitiated
  • conducting a scientific experiment
  • writing a research paper
  • installing an OS
  • operating an oscilloscope, DMM, etc.
  • programming a PIC and integrating it in a circuit
  • appreciating literature, art, music
  • cooking - and I mean that in an artistic sense
  • deciphering schematics
  • calculus

Some computer related realizations

  1. Vista isn't so bad. A little patronizing sometimes, but you can tweak it.
  2. I really enjoy using Microsoft Expressions Web. It does pretty much the same thing as DreamWeaver but is a little more intuitive.
  3. On the other hand, Microsoft Expressions Design and Blend are clunky and inelegant.
  4. I'm thinking about putting Kubuntu on my laptop.

Materialism

For the first time ever, I can't think of a single thing I want to spend money on. In the past I've always let money burn a hole in my pocket (as my mom puts it) but right now I'm ok not spending it. One reason of course may be that I realize I need to spend that money on my increasing debt. And there are things at the sidelines of my desire - a moped, a ribbon microphone, a vintage Bassman. But those are impotent desires. I feel content to let a few extra dollars sit for now, and I'll feed some of it toward my debts. And I'll save it for moving in September. I've been budgeting since January - I've never paid so close attention to my finances before - it has reduced my habitual spending and compulsion to collect. I have everything I need for now.

Reading, watching, moving

Reading
Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates, Tom Robbins.
Like any Robbins book it is intensely weird and impossible to put down. The plot: CIA operative Switters is on a mission in the South American jungle- to release his grandmother's beloved aging parrot into the wild. In the jungle he meets End of Time (another name for him is Today is Tomorrow), an Indian shaman with a pyramid-shaped skull. End of Time gives Switters psychedelics and also places a curse on him that he cannot touch the earth with his feet. I won't go any further into the description, but I am enjoying this daily on the train.

Maggie the Mechanic, Jaime Hernandez.
I only just started this graphic novel, but so far it's excellent. This is a Love and Rockets book. I have read some of Gilbert Hernandez (Jaime's brother)'s Love and Rockets graphic novels which are also excellent.

Watching

Mythbusters
Curb Your Enthusiasm, season 6

Hulu:
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, seasons 1 and 3
The Office, current season

Youtube:
Top Chef, current season
America's Next Top Model, current season

Moving
We are considering moving to Lincoln Park/DePaul, Lakeview, or Roscoe Village when our lease is up at the end of the summer. Also, I'll be getting rid of my car sometime in the summer. We want to go east. We're getting tired of certain aspects of the neighborhood, namely the violence, litter, food poisoning, and also there was a dead guy on the steps. I think we'll spend a little more money and have a smaller place.

Thinking about the summer

I can't find my camera. It's really too bad because everywhere I look there is something I want a picture of. You can see my phone pic mo-blog here. I'm really busy. I work about 32 hours a week and school is intense. And now I'm in a band which is totally cool. It's been a while. Remember?

Chicago is amazing. I love the lake, the trains, the restaurants, the awesome people. But I miss Michigan too. I miss the spookiness and the abandonment. And the river trail. I wish I could ride my bike here without being scared of cars. Lots of people die here getting hit on their bikes. Chicago claims to be a bike friendly city but it's really not.

I have a C+ in one of my classes right now. That's no good. I'm a grad student. I need at least a B- to pass. I'm only about one point off but it means I have to push harder until the end of the quarter. It's Data Structures and Algorithms in Java. The class isn't uninteresting, it's just very difficult. My other class I'm doing fine in, in fact I got an A+ on the midterm. It's Usability Engineering and I'm very into that class. I know I'll do fine this quarter, just gotta spend more time studying.

Read my twitter - add me so I can follow you.

And that blood's so real, because I just can't fake it. And that blood...
